Appreciation... Chloe Howl

Although I'll always prided myself on being into music that's "left of the dial", I've been indulging more openly the last few years on what songs just hit my heart! After all, isn't that the only thing that matters! And while this may mean I've got more pop sounding songs on my player these days, it doesn't mean I'm exactly lining up for the new Katy Perry album either. No offense to Katy or her fans!

Sadly, an album I would gladly endure any length of line for is the debut album of UK pop singer, Chloe Howl. If you've never heard of Chloe Howl, she was shortlisted for two BRIT award nominations in 2014,  for Pop Singer/Songwriter and for best new artist for their Sound of the Year award. She's been favourably compared touted my the British music press as the "most exciting UK pop prospect since Lily Allen and Kate Nash." Unfortunately Sony's Columbia Records UK never released her album. This is truly a loss considering the quality of the handful of singles she's so far released.  My introduction to her was the video for her song "Paper Hearts". The video popped up as a suggestion in that YouTube sidebar, and with one view I was hooked! It's such a great song! It's a wonderful show of strength breakup song, with a video that has got to be the ultimate good-bye anyone's ever said to a now to be former lover!

I could go on and on about how music I love her music or appreciate her sense of style, but I think if you merely take in this one video it will speak more for why she deserves a full length album release now. Like right now! Here's "Paper Hearts"!

There's hope though! She did sign to the Heavenly label in the UK! Fingers crossed!

Appreciation... Songs of My Summer!

This summer had me feeling very up and very, very down, but an ever constant bright spot through this season of my life has been new music! So I wanted to do something to this silly playlist I've been enjoying and share it with others! This mix is thirty-seven tracks of predominately upbeat, indie pop and dance tracks that slants more female vocalists than males probably 3:1, and even gives some love for my favourite anime series in more ways than one!

With that many tracks total, I broke it up into "Disc One" and "Disc Two" so that it's burnable friendly in case anyone wants to easily put it onto CDs. If you prefer the mp3s, just combine the folders and the tracks are titled 1-37 to maintain the playlist. See the tracklist is there after the links!

Download it, dance to it, love and be shiny and beautiful to it! I hope it moves you! Cheers!  If you like what you hear, please support these fine artists and buy their music! Records are awesome!

Jubilation... Tickets to see Chvrches live in concert!

Oh, this June is going to be so important for me, because as of ten o'clock this morning I was lucky enough to get tickets to see Chvrches on June 12th in Baltimore! This is just so wonderful! Their album "Every Open Eye" is absolutely my favourite album that came out in 2015! If I had to make a soundtrack of my transition, there would be many Chvrches songs on the list for certain! Their music has kept my spirit upbeat and dancing, positive and courageous! I'm just so happy to be able to finally see them!

Inspiration... New Doors

Been feeling pretty good this week, and thinking a lot about the future. I just feel really encouraged about my transition and in what's possible for me, so it time to make some plans for it!

I don't have much time for any more of a post this morning, but I saw this image and wanted to hang on to it. Here's hoping and to opening some new doors!

Inspiration... Magical Girl Comics

After my earlier Sailor Moon post, I got to thinking about this magical girl image series I saw on Tumblr months ago!

I wish I knew where this comic is from, and if the dialogue is original or if it was developed by someone on their own or with appropriated images?

Either way, it makes me smile!

Oh, if only it were so easy... :)

Truest affection... Sailor Moon!

In living more openly and honestly in my life, I have come to discover there's a lot of sort of guilty pleasures that I can indulge in now in ways I never really could before! And one of the biggest secret passions of mine is the anime series, Sailor Moon!

The series itself debuted in the States in 1992, and I was certainly aware of it but I didn't truly discover the series for myself until it was over. I moved to Canada in 1998 to go to art school, and for the first time in my life I had the experience of living with roommates. I found it challenging to live with these two guys I barely knew, but fortunately one of them was the best friend of my girlfriend at that time. Mark was a good guy, who went to school part-time, but mostly worked at a Tim Horton's and always came home smelling of coffee. He was funny, but a bit troubled and struggled with depression.  He was gay, and he had a very cool boyfriend when I first met him. When that guy broke his heart, I got to discover how much he truly loved Cher. Another big interest of Mark's was the cartoon adventures of Sailor Moon and her friends! It was his go-to-show every day after work while he'd have his go-to-dinner of Spaghetti-O's. At first, I didn't know what to think of it. I thought "Oh, I don't want to watch that. I'll go eat my dinner in the kitchen." But I remember hearing the chatter of the characters about love and courage and friendship while I sat eating a lonely dinner in the next room. It wasn't long at all before I found myself on the other end of the sofa! I started with the end of the series, so there was a lot of confusion about what was going on at first. But fortunately, Mark was rather informed on the show, and there were a few great sites online to learn more! As I came to learn the show's story and especially its cast of characters, I really came to understand why Mark liked it!

Sailor Moon was the alter ego of this lovable crybaby, Usagi Tsukino. However when she called out the right magic words and held up her magical pen, her powers activated to transform her into a powerful force to be reckoned with -she became the guardian, Sailor Moon! She was a good person, and the friendships she forged laid the foundation of the team that came to be with the other Sailor Scouts! Ami (Sailor Mercury), the nerdy girl outcast; Rei (Sailor Mars), the slightly older and spiritual girl from a local Shrine; Matoko (Sailor Venus), the new girl at school who was too tall for a girl, and then Minako (Sailor Venus), who was already operating on her own, fighting as the publicly known superhero, Sailor V! Throw in an exciting backstory of ruined kingdoms and lost love; Luna, a cat charged with the responsibility to unite these lost guardians; a dashing ally in the mysterious stranger named Tuxedo Mask; then add a slew of nefarious cosmic villains and a handful of other Scouts and Stars, and that's a recipe for one very adventurous and beautifully tender series!

Part of the magic of this series for so many fans is that it's been so empowering for women! Sailor Moon's creator, Naoko Takeuchi, gave the world its first ever all-girl superhero team, and they worked together to stand against every threat that came at them! Sure there was that guy Tuxedo Mask, who fought hard to protect Sailor Moon. But overall, these girls took care of themselves, and they had a beautiful friendship that banded them together! The show is also quite notable for its decent and honest portrayals of lesbian and even transgender characters, and in doing so the show has empowered those audiences and earned a devoted fan base with many young LGBTQ people, both then and now!

Now is an exciting time for Sailor Moon fans, as Sailor Moon kicked off a relaunch of the series in 2014, with the new series "Pretty Guardian, Sailor Moon: Crystal". This series is the most faithful adaptation of the manga yet to be released, and corresponds perfectly with the twelve volume series printed by Kondansha Publishing. The censored love stories and rewritten identities that created many problems in the overall storyline of the original five seasons have been restored to their original Japanese characterisations and plot. This is particularly exciting now in the present episodes of the third season, "Infnity", as these current episodes have introduced Mirichu Kiaoh (Sailor Neptune) and Haruka Tenou,(Sailor Uranus), whose relationship was censored originally in many international markets for the show. They are tricky characters as Haruka presents herself as a man during their class time at school and in her profession as a race car driver, all the while the partner of Mirichu. By night though, Haruka is most certainly a woman! But as she says to Usagi who eventually questions Haruka about this shifting gender presentation, to which Haruka replies "A man or a woman... is it that important?"

But Haruka isn't the only character whose shifting gender identity challenged society's understanding of gender presentation. There's an entire group of Guardians beyond the Outer Senshi known as the Sailor Starlights, who initially come to Earth as male and pass themselves off as a trio of Japanese boy pop stars, but when they use their powers to transform, all three become beautiful women!

If I've ever seen something and had a private "What the what???" moment to myself, this was it! If I had any doubts about the Magical Girl genre of manga and anime being for me, this take on that troupe in the original Sailor Moon anime series certainly did much to make me feel right at home! I know they weren't really transgender, and I know that this was a departure in the anime versus the original manga, but I was thankful for this moment. I saw this as a 23 year old person, who felt very hurt and confused inside so much of the time, and it did give me a small bit of hope at acceptance someday. I don't think I had any real sense of the possibility of transitioning or even what that was really in 1999, but there was always some glimmer of private hope that something could happen in this lifetime to bring me to a true place with myself. I've always thought that part of the magic of superheroes and such characters when you're young is that they inspire you to be your best self. To me that is what all of the heroines and those incredible cats on Sailor Moon have given me - the courage to be my best self and to do the best I can for those I love! How can you not hold a place in your heart for a cartoon like that!

If you've never discovered the magic of Sailor Moon then I've got to stop right now and recommend Sailor Moon Crystal! It is the most faithful adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi's original manga that has been animated to date! The show's look has been slightly updated and the original relationships and identities are uncensored. The new theme songs are so catchy and bright! The first two seasons are available on Hulu now, and the Season Three Infinity arc is coming out in real time through Hulu now, with a new episode available every Monday! Just check out the show's opening!

Last but not least, if you'd like to hear more of an LGBT response to the show from the young people who grew up and relied on the series and its empowering message and characters, check out this video from the Vice series on pop culture phenomenons, American Obsessions. They have a wonderful ten minute piece devoted to Sailor Moon.

That's all I have to share this post! I hope you may have learned something about Sailor Moon or if you've always been a fan, I hope my feelings on the show made you smile and feel your own feels for the series! Until next time, remember that "the Moonlight is the Messenger of Love!"

Appreciation... New single by Chvrches!

Chvrches have become on of my favourite groups since the release of their album, "The Bones of What You Believe" debuted in 2013. Their sophomore album arrived on September 24th, 2015, and very quickly it became the album of my year! I still listen to it so much! But as a fan, I have to wonder what new music comes next for them, and last week, the band released a brand new single that they've created as a contribution to the soundtrack for the upcoming release of the video game, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst. I can't say I know much about video games at all, but I am most certainly hooked on this new track! Check it out and see what you think!

Celebration... Six Months HRT!

I had my fourth appointment at the Mazzoni Center today, and the checkup went really well! My doctor told me he'll need to see me in August, but after that I'll switch to annual visits. He spent a lot of time with me discussing how the hormones and the blocker are working to change my body, and I feel very encouraged about the results so far. I have definitely experienced some moodiness finally in all of this, but I feel much better now. After than appointment I decided to do a little shopping on South Street, and then I wanted to find two stores on Pine Street: Giovanni's AIDS Thrift Shop and a place called, Omoi Zakka Shop, which is a lifestyle store that I recently discovered online.

I really enjoyed just spending a day out walking in the sunshine. It did me so much good. I treated myself to a lite vegan lunch, and then found those shops and took home some very cute little things for myself to celebrate six months of HRT! The little bunny in the pink kimono just makes me smile! The girl at the shop told me that the bunny will ward of evil spirits and fire, to which I answered "Good! I'm scared of both of those things!"

This was the nicest day I have enjoyed just for myself in some time. I think that is something about these appointments in Philly that I really enjoy.

Inspiration... A little reminder...

This was the second thing I ever posted on Tumblr when I started my transgender page last year, and I think this is still very good for me to hold dear. A reminder to believe in myself that I needed then I need even more right now.

When I posted this image, only three in my life knew what I was feeling or ever heard me say the word "transgender" in regards to my identity. Now that number has grown many times over, and includes most of my close friends, all of my immediate family, and even a large number of the customers I've known over the years through work.

When this post was originally made, I was also only starting therapy, and all of my hopes were fixed on getting the letter from my psychologist to qualify to begin HRT. Now here I am, close to a year later, close to having completed six months of HRT!

There's a lot of work to be done for myself yet. I have so many questions and things to figure out! Things like when do I start making noticeable feminine changes to my appearance through makeup? How and when do I start to alter my wardrobe to be more feminine? Do I just sit and wait and see what my body and the hormones do before I start thinking any further about clothes? Do I let all of the people I interact with but haven't come out to know what's going on up front? Or do I let them sort of wonder for a while? Is this when I'm going to start losing people as they decide whether or not they can really stand by me through this? I hope I'm about to learn that they meant every word they said when I came out. I have times when I have been full of doubts about everything, but most of that just comes from my anxiety about what people think of me. I need to let that go and just keep my chin up. I was never everybody's cup of tea before, and it's okay not to be now.

It is so easy to lose hope sometimes about what is possible for me in this transition, but in working to be a truly authentic me I feel already that this has made me a better me. If there are times, when I can see no other change in me than that, I must take heart that this is worth it! I am in a place in my life I never ever thought I could actually reach. I fear sometimes I am not very brave, and I know how good I am at running away from things. But after years and years of operating this way, I'm honestly too tired to run away anymore. It is time to put my strengths and energies into fully making a life for myself that finally true.

Time to go practice a bit of self care, especially for my skin right now, take my pills, and then off to bed. I've been a little blue tonight, but tomorrow's another day to try again.

Inspiration... this simple message...

I came across this simple quote this morning, but it really made me smile. It really should be that simple, for every girl.

Inspiration... Trans Girls' Names

I found this on Tumblr and it's got me thinking more about names.
Here's to trans girls' names.
Trans girls’ names that have a deep, symbolic meaning to them.
Trans girls’ names that were taken from a celebrity.
Trans girls’ names that were made up with on the spot.
Trans girls’ names that people don’t think are “real” names.
Trans girls’ names that were their birth names. trans girls’ names that are variations of their birth name.
Trans girls' names that celebrate an inspirational but fictional character. (I added this one!)
Your name is deep and powerful, and it’s perfect for you, if you think so too.

Motivation... "Realiti" by Grimes

Due to space limitations, "Realiti" didn't make the vinyl edition of Grimes' album "Art Angels", but I am so glad she included it with the digital download! It's been an absolute favourite song since getting the record late last year, and it's become the definitive song that gets me up and moving every morning! I just don't tire of it! The beat, the soundscape of it, that chorus:

"Oh, baby every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality
Oh, baby, every morning there are mountains to climb
Taking all my time
Oh, when I get up, this is what I see
Welcome to reality"

I hear these lines and I feel like "I accept there are obstacles in life, but take heart and overcome them!"

I love the video! It just makes me want to move and dance like her! So very thankful for her music at this time in my life!

Appreciation... The Acceptance of Dear Friends!

My birthday was a month ago today, and that's reason enough to show off this really sweet card, my good friend and co-worker Nicky, got for me! It just made me smile and tear up all at once! It’s little things like this that make me feel good about this path I’m on, and so very lucky to have some true friends who support me!

Inspiration... "There Is No Name Yet"

"There Is No Name Yet"

by Dorothea Lasky

Until I find a name
I will not put it in the soul calculator
I will leave it free and open and unnamed
And not limit my expectations for the kind of person
That goes in one direction of the wind
I will keep all lines of the wind open
And place all my days free and empty
And re-envision what it means to be unencumbered
Or bereft
Not crying but the expanse of numbers
That go beyond the grave to what is left
And it may be true
I said it could be true
That the sunny days do stick to walls
And then enter you
It may be true that the purple bells do chime
Everyday you let them
It may be true that the sweet juice
I put across my lips would not be my last
But that the nights could get better and better
Until the evil is banished until the day
When the sun would crush it anyway
It was true without a set of things like letters
It was true the air was free and open
And I saw things as they were
Without violence
For the first time

I've been putting a lot of thought into the question of a name lately. As I am still not out to many people in my life, I haven’t had to really step up and say I’d like you to use my new name… (fill in the blank). But this is something I hope to resolve soon. I imagine I can’t be the only one who has ever had so much back and forth when faced with this choice. I will always probably be “Jo” as I am planning on making “Josephine” a part of my name. I love the name “Audrey”, but I also like the name Alysia. I’ve had some fun going by “Audrey” or “Audrey Jo” online as I sign up for Ulta coupons, Modcloth newsletters, and on Tumblr, the I love the nickname, AJ. But I also feel awkward about it, so I start to think it’s a silly idea.  Of course, I do that with so many thing now, as I struggle to find comfort in this skin. But this poem has really given me a sense of inspiration to work harder to resolve some of these questions I still have about my transition, my presentation, and my hopes as I keep "all lines of the wind open" before me.

Confession... "Most people think I am writing a blog, but if you look closer, actually I am planning my escape."

I adore this short film. I found it a few years ago, and I think I feel a different set of emotions each time I watch it. It's charmingly French, especially as it offers several nods to classic French cinema. There's moments that make me laugh, but it often makes me quite sad too. There's a loneliness, a feeling of a sincere desperation to share something of yourself with someone. When you're lonely, there can be so much joy when someone enters your world if even for a little while. Even once you reach the end and discover "who" her visitor is I can't help feeling it's rather bittersweet. Watch it yourself and decide how you feel. I should add that the video's descrption offers these details: "Jeanne Damas humorously portrays the tormented soul of the self-indulgent 'Bohemian' who can't decide which pieces from & Other Stories' collection to wear. Director Wendy McColm presents a darker subtext that point to the changes that need to be made to the way in which women are portrayed both in, and by the fashion industry."

Inspiration... The Spook School

Music is the thing that keeps me going. It's always done that for me, and it's even more important now. Especially this band, The Spook School. I know there’s a number of transgender/gender queer artists out there, but this band really does it for me! This song especially has become a true favourite! It’s what I do every single day… I Try To Be Hopeful.
“Sometimes I get so hopeful I make myself scared / that I will wake up and the hope will disappear
Sometimes I see you clench your fists and close your eyes / like you’re dreading the same thing / like you’re saying your goodbyes
I’ve been waiting outside for what seems like years / when I finally get inside I’ll give in to the fear
of finally having what I want, I’ll finally know / if this really really will fix me / if my problems will all sail away
and I know, you’ve been finding things hard / if you want to we can sit outside / and talk about anything else / and I know, you’ve been upset / I know I’m not the best, but I’ll try
I’ll try, try to be hopeful / if you try, try to be hopeful
(and we can be/the best people we could ever be)”

"There's Always Music in the Air"

When I started this blog years ago, one of the biggest focuses I had at the time was music, and this passion certainly remains. So in order to get back on track a bit, I thought I could start with a little bit of music catch-up, because a lot of new sounds have entered my life in the last two years!

It's hard to even decide where to begin, so I'll simply pick a song by an artist I'm really enjoying these days. That artist is songwriter and producer, Gabrielle Smith, and her recording project as Eskimeaux. Smith adopted this moniker in 2007, when she began creating experimental and noise albums. In the years that followed, her music transformed into a more refined sound with an increasing focus on structured songwriting. This shift is especially evident on her last album, "O.K." which she describes as "beat-driven and poetic bedroom pop." Eskimeaux is also one of the founding members of The Epoch, a Brooklyn-based songwriting and art collective. This is the single "Broken Necks" from her 2015 album, "O.K.", and she's set to have a brand new EP, "Year of the Rabbit" available on April 15, 2016.

This is a great song for this time of year as "The birds are singing louder and the days are getting longer..." but it's a springtime song that carries a tinge of sadness too.

In Between Days

Life equals change. If you don't spend some moment each day pondering a new idea, ingesting some morsel of fresh knowledge, plotting a different course, even just dancing to an unfamiliar beat, well... then we stagnate, we grey, we cease to exist in a way that really matters. In the almost two years since my last post on this little blog of mine, my life has become a tremendous place for change, for reflection, for growth, for renewal, for reinvention, for personal truth. I am happy in a way I have never known. I feel alive in the knowledge of who I am. But I am also terrified. Terrified about facing rejection, terrified in knowing the resistance that comes with going against the grain in life, and maybe a bit terrified that acceptance will be a daily struggle.

When we are born our parents and our place in this society provide us an identity, and we are each groomed to understand what we need to play this role. But not all of us can take this part and make it work for us. There's problems with the script, we act out and push the boundaries of the role, conflicts arise with other members of the cast, or we have a disagreement with wardrobe. But that's the stuff of good drama, right? That's the stuff that makes people sit up in their chairs and pay attention!  It's what makes us rethink what we've been told about everyone's role in this production we call "Life." I know I like to think I have tried to push the script since the beginning, but the truth is I have only ever been so brave.

But what was my role? Was it really so bad? Well, no... but yes! But what can I do about it? I didn't ask for this role, you just gave me this part:
  • Firstborn son of a married heterosexual couple
  • Two siblings, a brother and a sister
  • Attendance at a local Protestant church
  • Grew up in a rural farming community
  • Limited exposure to life outside the "traditional white American experience"
There's times that I think that I wish I could have just gone along with all of it, and just became the person I was expected to be. Instead, I felt very deeply inside, even early on that that wasn't going to happen. I did not feel carefree or content about many aspects of this character I was set to play. My parents are truly and genuinely goodhearted people, so I will say right now that I am grateful for that. As far as me being the oldest, no objections there, and I love my siblings even despite some hurt feelings and misgivings along the way. As for being a son, well... I was cast in this boy body immediately upon joining this cast, so making that my identifying gender placed titles and pronouns and a world of expectations upon me immediately. And that is the place my problems truly began, for as I came into an understanding of what "boy" meant, what "he/his" meant, what "someday you'll be a man" required -I started to feel I didn't want that. But then what did I want? That is a decision that has taken me a lifetime to discover, and hasn't been an easy conclusion until now.  I knew as a kid that I just felt off compared to other boys. Situations like being in locker rooms were really tense for me. The dysphoric dread and terror of which team I could end up on in a soccer practice game of "shirts versus skins", was a horror I will never forget! I didn't want to take my shirt off! I remember begging Coach Nailor to "please, please let me be shirts!" I just wasn't like these "boys". These feelings were just overwhelming! Inside I thought it was wrong, but I felt like I should be a girl. So in 1992, at the age of 17 and after so many years of hurt feelings, I shared this with a few friends who did what I should have probably expected - they laughed.  So I laughed. I had to play it off, "I don't know what I'm saying, forgive me." But the feelings were true, and it has never ever waned. No matter who I dated, or that I finally got to go to art school, and especially impulsively getting married did nothing to lift this burden!

It would take twenty-three years to find the courage to sit down with a friend and tell her that inside I feel like a woman. So here I was in 2015, after years of learning a term called "transgender", after years of learning about options for medically transitioning, after countless nights spent reading others' accounts of all they did to try to be who everyone thought they should be and the courage they found to finally be who they really are... after all of that, all of these years, I have decided to finally be that person too.

I began coming out in May of last year, and on June 2nd, I had my first appointment with a gender therapist. I can genuinely say that I got so much out of this experience of therapy. It was reaffirming to my perception of my identity. We worked through the years of inner turmoil of internalising this struggle, and I was able to develop a way out of the corner I had painted myself into by developing a path to transition. I have to admit I had some initial misgivings about therapy, but it is a state required gender confirmation process that has to be done. I couldn't even talk to a doctor to begin gender transitioning without fulfilling this requirement. But the therapy really gave me a way to understand all of the challenges and necessities I would encounter and helped me develop a better road map for my transition. As I proceeded in therapy, I also did the work each week of setting goals for myself -come out to friends, find support in the community, foster relationships with allies, make financial considerations, find a health support clinic. From guidance in how to live and function as a woman, to understanding the changes in wardrobe, makeup, as well as managing the anxiety over personal image and "passing" which is an acceptance that most trans women struggle with their entire lives. I set goals every week, like I will come out to my parents by this date, I will find health services by this time, I will go to Pride in Lancaster and Harrisburg, I will go out and buy women's clothes at this time, I will secure my letter of gender confirmation by this date, and ideally begin HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy).

I got my letter from my therapist on October 19th, and that was a very special night for me! After four and a half months of weekly therapy, I was so ready for that moment. My first doctor's appointment was the next morning at the Mazzoni Center in Philadelphia, and I don't even know how I got any sleep the night before! I had two appointments that morning. The first one was to be assessed by their on staff psychologist, and review my letter. After that initial hour, I had a small break and met with my endochrinologist for the first time! We discussed my hopes for transitioning, what I could expect from HRT and that it carries health risks too. After that, it was time to draw some blood. And that was kind of that until next month, when we would go over my labs in a follow up appointment.

That follow up came on November 18th, and I was quite pleased with the feedback on my health, especially that my natural testosterone level was already quite below low normal. I got my first HRT prescriptions for Estradiol (Estrogen) and Spironolactone, which is taken to lower the testosterone levels even further so that the estrogen can do its thing on me!

I took my first set of pills on November 19th, and taking three pills has never carried so many emotions ever before in my life! But this was it! It was really happening! This thing that I had really come to think would never, ever be possible for me in this life... the door opened and I chose to enter! Sometimes, I think about how I wish I could have arrived here sooner. I wish that I was younger in doing this, that I had taken better care of myself along the way, that this or that about my life might have gone differently. But all that really matters to me is that I am here now. This is real. I was finally ready, and the world is just a little better in its regard for the acceptance and humane treatment of transgender people. There's still so far to go -especially when it comes to protections for basic rights, access to affordable healthcare, and the overwhelming spectre of violence that exists in this world against transgender people.

But I am here, and this is happening -my transition is not even a year old, but it's been a time I will always remember! I still have a lot to learn and so far to go in this experience, but the support and encouragement I have found so far has been so good for my heart and my sense of my self worth! I got here later in life. But again I'm here, and it's time to focus on what's ahead of me!

Inspiration... "365 for 365" and what it means to me!

I recently came across an article for the AV Club by David Johnson entitled "365 for 365: The year of buying a record a day", and I must say I can relate very well to this article and what a life-affirming power music has been for me in my own life.  My life is in a rather good spot right now, and it has been since June of this past year(if you stick with me, more on that later).  I would not have said the same thing for much of the wild mood swing that was my life from late 2011 until last spring.  For all these ups and downs, I had the support of a few close friends and a goodly steady job (very thankful on both accounts), but the other driving force that got me through all of it - my soundtrack.  I feel like for any triumphs or tragedies that have come my way there's also been that connection to a song or an album or an artist that carried on stalwartly beside me, often on repeat to galvanise my heart and mind in resolute strength to stand up and meet the forces against me!  In this day and age though it is incredibly easy to take music and to take it for granted.  It have been guilty of both, but more the latter and that disregard lead me to some rather foolish decisions when times were hard.  As such a physical music collection I was once ever so proud of and took much delight in was reduced to a hard drive, and 17 large spindles of burned CDs to accompany one lonely shelf of wonders on CD and vinyl that I just couldn't live without.  Here and there since this complete err in judgement in 2007, I would vow to turn this situation around and as such some music buying would occur.  Feeling particularly out of the loop though, I focused on new bands, new finds, new sounds, and the rebuilding took a backseat to new discoveries.  Nothing wrong with that, but something was always missing.  I'd pick up the new Editors and think about how I needed to get around to adding those Deluxe Joy Division remasters to my wish list, or I'd pick up the new Franz Ferdinand and wonder about whether I should look to see what remastered Orange Juice or Josef K might be out there or on the horizon.

But then I suffered a blow in February 2013 when a WD Book with my beloved music collection decided "No, I've had it with you!" and it quit on me!  Sectors were lost, albums without a physical hard copy of any kind were gone.  Sadly, much of what I lost couldn't just be borrowed from a friend and re-ripped.  This came at a time though when I really wasn't buying any music.  My life was complicated, and I can only say there was just more important things to focus on, believe it or not.  I spent too many sickening hours trying to restore things.  In one desperate afternoon I attempted to take advantage of the winter weather and I put the hard drive in a window sill and run the cords inside to the computer to retrieve whatever I could before the drive overheated and was done.  And that was it then... I'd done all I could do.  I lost a lot of albums that had been with me a long, long time, and a lot of new music I had downloaded as samples and maybe traded some files on were just gone.  I had been buying digital albums from labels and Amazon for much of 2012 as an experiment, and it was nice that I could retrieve tracks that went into my Amazon Cloud, but my digital purchases suffered losses too.

It wouldn't be until the spring and the end of very complicated relationship, that I would be able to do much to hatch any great schemes about rebuilding my physical music library.  But then summer came and as part of the old ritual of putting myself back together again, I made music the central part.  I started getting out and looking around through music bins in charity shops and at proper record stores.  I went on a record run to Hampden with two good friends, and at a local media shop I met an amazing young woman who really enjoyed chatting about music with me and gave me her number.  Flash forward, here I am months later... love the girl, live with the girl, sharing music with her, sharing music with my friends, and these healthy passions are serving me well.  I live with a certain amount of negative noise in my head.  Life does that to you.  So I am thankful that I can connect with good people and enjoy some good tunes.  That and my lady love are all I need!

As for the collecting, I don't know if I can realise a goal as such of a new album per day because the logistics are tricky when it comes to time and funding, but I'm giving it a go in my own fashion.  To this end, I have started selling off some of my comic book collectibles, statues and such, and I'm enjoying putting those funds back into music because as a Russian lad once advised a friend, "you can't get your kicks with action figures".  As I see it I fancy all the kicks I can get!  I like the collector's adventure.  The thrill of the hunt, the suspense of what you might find when you get into a shop full of music, sharing news of your finds with good friends, hearing their tales of acquisitions, or even better hunting as a pack!  I want record runs with friends to be as frequent in my life as other guys go out for beers or a day of golf or fishing.  I'm thankful my girlfriend loves music and that we share a lot of mutual appreciations!  That makes bringing home music even more fun!  I'm even discovering that there's fun to be had online using Discogs to list my collection and want lists and buy and talk music a bit with the sellers there.  I'm looking forward to also bringing this interest in music to my passion for art.

This is good for me.  This blog is my travelogue for this journey.  Let's see where it goes!
